She forgets how much I hate it every 12 months or so and puts me back on her list. I also have an extremely religious Aunt who lives in Beeville, TX, who must spend her entire day collecting inspirational stories that usually end with something like, "....and that carpenter's name was Jesus." Here is a strategy I have used successfully many times with family members who send me stupid chain letters, urban legends, jokes, etc. I "forward" the message right back to them with no comment. The first couple of times you do this, they will figure you are just stupid and don't know how to use email properly. After the fourth or fifth time, they start to get the hint. I don't think I've ever had to do it more than 6 times. Another successful strategy I have used with friends and family is to treat it just like any other spam, and reply to the message with an all cap REMOVE FROM SPAM LIST in the subject line. This usually works on the first try. With those I know to be especially sensitive (Hi Mom), I send them a note saying how much I enjoy exchanging email with them on subjects concerning our actual lives , but that I simply do not have the time to open and read these chain emails. Then I offer an amusing story about something I did in the last couple of days, and ask them to let me know what they have been up to. That usually works for a month or two. Then I will undoubtedly receive another bit of spam that starts with, "I know you said not to send these, but this one is really, really funny and I know you'll like it." At this point, I usually resort to option 1 or 2 supra. P.S. Just a week ago after getting about 5 spam emails from my mother in as many days, after a spamming hiatus of a year or so, I fired back asking how I ended up back on her spam list. She responded, I kid you not, with this reply:That is some way to talk to a person who would die for you. She is good.
