Ted, I give up! Go in ignorance.

Don't give up. I'm sure you'll be able to convince your middle school students that the former Soviet Union wasn't a communism, and that America would do so much better if only they followed a European model of socialism.

Yes, the former Soviet Union was an example of a dictatorship, not communism. And yes, Europe is a capitalist economy much like the US except its not as free market as we are. And yes, there are things that are better about Europe, and yes, there are things that are worse
about Europe.

The truth has never hurt anyone so why continue with bad information?

It's no wonder why our youth start out liberal and turn more conservative as they grow up. Some of them discover that what they learned in school and college is B.S.

The only reason people get more conservative is because they have more to lose as they accumulate wealth so they give up their idealism in exchange for possessions. Its really very sad.

P.S. - While you're at it, you might also continue perpetuating the myth of Social Security that I was taught when I was in school, "The government takes part of your paycheck, saves it for you, then pays it back when you retire."

Please, you're going to make me tear up. I never realized how hard you've had it.
