It's true that the author did not know Tillman. That was implicitly stated in the article. The author offered an opinion.

"It wasn't like he was defending the East coast from an invasion of a foreign power. THAT would have been heroic and laudable," Gonzalez writes. "What he did was make himself useful to a foreign invading army"

You don't have to agree with the author's opinion. But you should respect his right to say it.
