Bush-Cheney Ignore Terrorist Warnings To Nation's Chemical Plants

Two years ago, the CIA (news - web sites) warned of the potential for an al-Qaida attack on U.S. chemical facilities. According to the General Accounting Office (news - web sites), an investigative arm of Congress, about a fifth of the nation's 15,000 chemical facilities are close enough to population centers that a terrorist attack could harm at least 10,000 people.

John Kerry said he will require chemical plants at risk of terrorist attack to implement adequate physical security, including fences, guards and surveillance. He said his plan calls for government action to implement the requirements only if plants fail to act, including assessing their vulnerability on an individualized basis.

The plan mirrors legislation Kerry, a Massachusetts senator, sponsored in early 2003 with Sen. Jon Corzine, D-N.J., and other Democrats. It stalled in the Senate over opposition from Republicans, who said it sought to inappropriately micromanage the nation's $450 billion chemical industry.

Kerry would require the Department of Homeland Security to review and certify vulnerability studies for chemical plants deemed high-priority targets. There presently are no legal requirements for such plants to assess vulnerabilities or take security actions to guard against a terrorist attack, although the industry's leading trade group, the American Chemistry Council, requires its members to do so.

* This mirrors Kerry warning Bush about 9-11 type attacks in 2000 but being ignored. same with his warning Bush about no post-war planning in Iraq and no UN role. Again, ignored. We all pay the price every time Bush ignores Kerry's advice.

People are finally catching on. 55% in today's CBS poll have finally figured out the US is on the wrong track under Bush. It should be 95%.

The terrorist czar under Bush, Richard Clarke, doesn't agree with you. HE thinks BUSh has inflamed the terrorists and helped them morph into many more cults. He was trusted by the Bush administration to run this country on 9/11 so he was very much in the loop inspite of the lies told by Bush'Cheney.

From the looks of what is happening in Iraq I think Clarke is correct. We still haven't stopped Al Qaeda and they have had 2 years to regroup while our armies are tied up in Iraq.

Would you want to send you kids off to fight for a war that was sold to the American people based on lies and false illusions?. The path that Bush has led us down has brought us to disaster.

TEN soldiers died today in Iraq.

Cheney-Bush have more in common with Nazis than you realize. Nazi Germany started with extreme nationalism, scapegoating, mobs threatening voters (remember Florida), crack down on the press and dissenters and unilateral unprovoked invasion of another country.

OK, Bush is no Nazi, but you have to admit that he's not exactly the opposite of a Nazi either and he's become more Nazi-like since 2000. What's scary about the Patriot act is that it could easily be abused (as Nixon and Hoover did) to spy on political opponents and start doing as Anne Coulter suggests, brand all critics "traitors" and start an inquisition a la her hero Joseph McCarthy.

General Tommy Franks, hardly a liberal, recently warned that one dirty bomb attack inside the US and our constitution could be scrapped. Don't think it could never happen if the Cheney and Delay types gain more power.

Dwight Eisenhower warned us to beware for democracy if the industrial-military complex ever gets too much power. Cheney clearly represents the military-industrial complex and now seems to dominate Bush and the entire government.

The extreme right have had their chance and failed us. They are very corrupt and lie all the time. Time to show them the door. And don't let it hit them on the way out. These are not your father's conservatives, in fact they're not conservative at all. They're just dishonest and scary.

I for one say thank you President George Bush for the strong leadership he has exhibited in making our nation a safer place.

One year after "Mission Accomplished" soldiers are still dying in Iraq. And you say the world is a safer place? Excuse me, am I missing something here?
