If the guy has no history of being one of Saddass's personal butchers ( i.e.: he's strictly military ) I think it's a good plan. He has the skills, needs the job, and he's not going to be put-off by any raf-tag bands of wacko-ragheads or goofballs like al-Sadr. And, hopefully, some good men would rally around him and put down the local BS.

A lot of the hassle over there stems from regular military guys who were crap-canned wholesale - just for being in uniform.

Marshall, Patton and MacArthur all used local people to rebuild the governments that had been conquered. Talent, like natural resources, needs to be used, right up until it misbehaves - then you make adjustments.

IMO if he is too pro USA he will be the next target. If he is not, he will bear a close watch by us. It is difficult for me to believe that any Saddam General is going to be completely on our side. OTOH, he may be a lot smarter than I am giving him credit. Hopefully, it works so we can lessen the risk to our troops.
