you must not be including Enron or Global Crossing.

although of course labor unions help a company go bankrupt quicker. most cos do not make enough money for both labor and Chief Expropriating Officers to loot the pot.

I am actually not a fan of unions. They served their purpose decades ago in getting valid labor rights, health care plans and pensions. Then, they morphed into giant beings with too much power and basically handcuffed a lot of companies. IMO, these big unions have failed thier memberships by not working WITH companies at long term strategies. Now, as we see more layoffs and overseas job relocations, the union 'tough guy' stance will only get them deeper in the whole. And once again, the average Joe will be the one to suffer.

Good observation<g>, I have not noticed that. But you have to agree that labor union does protect the interest of the less capable and elder workers<g>

Struggling Supermarket Operator Winn-Dixie to Close, Sell 156 Stores, Cut 10,000 Jobs

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Struggling supermarket operator Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. plans to cut 10,000 jobs from its payroll by closing or selling 156 stores and three distribution centers and selling several manufacturing businesses over the next year, the company announced Friday.

The job cuts will reduce its work force by about 10 percent.

The company said it plans to close 45 unprofitable or poorly located stores and put another 111 stores up for sale and close them if it cannot find buyers. Its stores are mostly in the Southeast and Midwest.
