James, I do understand your perception about gold and if you are an investor I hope for your sake that you are right.

To me, there has been something phony about the whole bull market of the past three years because, with the exception of certain mines covering their forward hedges, it has been driven by the purchase of derivatives and not by the purchase of bullion itself. For this reason, since the market is clearly motivated by speculation and not investment, one has to be ready for extreme price volatility, as we have witnessed.
