The Kerry Campaign announced that 400,000 Americans have contributed over $80 million to John Kerry's presidential campaign.

"The 400,000 Americans have powered our campaign to reach the $80 million 2004 goal a full three months early," said Mary Beth Cahill. "It is the John Kerry way, ahead of schedule and under budget. The Kerry Campaign has over 400,000 financial supporters and we are just getting started."
The Kerry Campaign raised over $34 million online at www.johnkerry.com and at least $12 million in grassroots fundraising from mail and telephones. With a 20 city, $20 million swing set to conclude in St. Louis on Friday, the campaign announced that it has raised more than $34 million from these fundraising events - $14 million more than the $20 million goal.

Coming off a record-setting March and first quarter, Kerry shattered records with a one-night record of $6.5 million raised in New York City. Earlier this month in his hometown, Kerry set a Boston record of $4.6 million in one night. Kerry even raised $1.2 million in Bush's backyard of Houston this month.

Last month, the Kerry Campaign announced plans to raise $80 million in 2004 prior to the July convention. The goal was to raise $40 million from traditional fundraising events and $40 from online, grassroots, small donor fundraising.

"JohnKerry.com has raised over $34 million online this year," said Josh Ross, Kerry Director of Internet Strategy. "We are in groundbreaking territory in both the numbers of Americans contributing online and total money raised. We raised over $7 million at JohnKerry.com in April alone."

"From coast to coast we set an ambitious goal of $20 million in 20 cities and beat the goal by more than $14 million," said Louis B. Susman, Kerry National Finance Chairman. "Over the next three months we will focus on providing the campaign and the party the funds it needs to drive John Kerry's message of a safer America, with strong leadership and strong alliances."

"We started off in March with the Bush-Cheney Campaign at $110 million cash-on-hand while we had $2 million. In just one month, we've been able to make a 55 to 1 gap into a 3 to 1 gap," said Cahill. "This success is due to the energy that John Kerry generates on the campaign trail."

Over the next three months, the Kerry campaign will continue to fundraise for the campaign as well as for the Democratic National Committee.

In the 2004 first quarter FEC reports, the Kerry Campaign reported collecting $54.8 million in the first quarter of 2004, beating both President George Bush's totals for the quarter and the previous quarterly fundraising record for a presidential candidate - incumbent and non-incumbent - by more than $2 million. Kerry also broke the record for fundraising in one month, gathering $42.8 million in March 2004.
