The problem, of course, is that those countries that have embraced the market economy, like China, and its various offshoots, have done better than those who clung to socialist fantasies.

I confess that I've read as little Marx as I could get away with. Did Marx think that the world would go communist as an abreaction against the failure of capitalism, or that the successes of capitalism would make socialism possible?

My guess is the former, but it seems to me that the more successful capitalism is, the better off workers are.
