I agree with everything you say, except that they shame the entire US. Nothing shames the entire US unless the entire US buys off on it- and almost no one in the US would approve of what was done to those prisoners (except for that hardcore contingent who keep saying the Iraqis are subhuman and we should just nuke 'em all- they probably don't disapprove- but they are a small contingent). I don't think even the Iraq war shames the entire US, since there were many of us, like me, who were out marching and doing everything we could to prevent the war from occurring. My country made a mistake, but I am not shamed, because I was against the stupid policy, and I refuse to take the blame for the mistakes and misleading propaganda of a relative few.
