I know about this. I realize you meant "minor oversight" as a joke, but in fact this is a very minor point. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" is the rule in the ME. So for bin Ladin to oppose Saddam prior to American action against him does not by any means preclude Al Qaida from moving into support for Saddam after America became involved against Iraq.

You are confusing al qaeda / Bin Laden's support for the Iraqi people for support of Saddam. I think you are confused if you think that Al Qaida cares one bit about the Iraqi people.
