Kerry was a sterling leader in Nam. Though there for a relatively short time, he quickly turned around the entire thinking of the Squad Boat units, taking the offensive instead of playing defense. It was a gutsy move and risked his own life, but it worked. Kerry also showed an ability to lead men from all walks of life and get their respectm, despite his own rather elitist upbringing.

Kerry was steely under fire and saved the lives of others while stepping into the hero's role as offensive leader. He killed enemy but also had a conscience and was emotionally moved by what he witnessed.

But basically he was the traditional combat leader. The guy who yells "Charge!" and gets others to follow him.

Also, keep in mind that 4 months up the Mekong is 120 days of pure hell with very hairy situations every single day. Life expectancy under those conditions is short, so 120 days is a small lifetime.

GW Bush on the other hand, had no such courage, leadership or honesty. His main move was to EVADE danger, responsibility, accountability, hard work and drug tests. When you compare the two men at this stage in their lives, there is really no comparison. That is why the RNC and rightwing are trying so hard to somehow assassinate Kery's character and smear his Vietnam record, because if voters compare the two men, it's no contest. Kerry wins by a landslide.
