Indeed. But that's why they illustrate. There's no point in finding families that differ from the stereotype.

If the idea is to seek out "normal people" or whatever, it is a poor sample.

The whole point of categorizing is to compare and contrast typical examples is to give us insights and to help us understand patterns. It's not about stigmatizing or insulting, although some will use it for that.

Except when the sample is skewed to demonstrate preconcieved results. The result isn't reality - it's a cliche billed to reinforce already held assumptions.

And San Francisco is not an alarm ringer? C'mon. That's not at least the equivalent of DeLay-ville in the raised hackle department? Looks like pretty even treatment to me.

From what I know of San Fran, the example is more representative. And as Bill commented, the reporter was obviously more comfortable - less loaded imagery, IMO.
