I didn't identify with either family.

That, IMO, is the problem. The general population is more, dare I venture, nuanced.

In a wealthy, highly educated, very conservative exurb of the fourth largest city in the United States, why pick the guy your New York liberal friends will recognize as the "DeLay redneck"?

It is comfortable.

One of the local TV stations did a piece last evening on the fellow that was instrumental in rescuing Jessica Lynch--Mohammed somebody. He's working in a law office here. The lawyers sponsored him and managed to get his brother out of Iraq when he was at risk. There was no mention of a wife or other family. He lost sight in his left eye as a result of the incident and surgeons here were unable to repair it. My impression was that he seemed to be doing okay, but he didn't look particularly happy.
