Gefilte fish: As a kid, I used to fish off the Ocean Park Pier in Calif. (no longer there--the pier, that is.) and catch tomcod or king fish as that was more politically correct at the time. They were awful to eat and not even very much fun to catch compared to mackerel who were great fighters. Tom Cods, once hooked just kind of laid there. When I got older, I found out from my grandmother that Gefilte fish was made from 'king fish'. Eating it has never been the same (I recalled how the hooked cods just laid there like the piece of gefilte fish.) but someone always provides good horseradish at Passover Seders. Have you tried Halavah? It is also an acquired taste and is wonderful for clogging the arteries.
