There's another good food. Besides okra gumbo or jambalaya, I like to make a beef stew with a heavy dose of cajun spice.

But when I go to Pitman, Pennsylvania for the annual Hepler family reunion, the food those people (Mennonites and Pennsylvania Dutch) eat is so plain, the only seasoning they use is salt and pepper and not much of that.

Comes with the religous territory. Simplicity. Though every couple of weeks I swing over to a dutch country market and pick up some of their vegs, sausages, egg noodles, and various meats. High quality products.

I spent my army time in Germany and there wasn't anything bland about their schnitzels and wurst. Plus the food varies on where you are at in Germany. Octoberfest they serve you a whole roasted chicken and a liter of stout beer, then more beer. You eat the chicken with your hands and after 3 liters of beer singing German songs becomes part of the meal.

OTOH if you are in Northeastern Germany, breakfast is the big deal. Poached egg with hot, fresh bread plus a platter of many kinds of cheeses and spiced meats.
