What a nice group of kids. The concentration in that room was palpable. There was one girl who really amused me- she had three little plastic figurines (small ones) lined up in front of her as she took the test. I would love to know why she picked those three figures. One figure was a little yellow and red frog. One was a knight, holding a flag. And the last was a little roan horse. I hope she did well. Some students had watches put out beside their tests- even though we had a million clocks in the room. One girl had brought (I swear) enough pencils for all 69 students- sharpened to deadly points. And during the exam she changed pencils about every five minutes. It was a three hour exam- in case you are interested in doing the math, and figuring out just how many pencils this girl used (you'll need to figure in our 10 minute break). I finished one of my books during the exam- Where or When- by Shreve, which I liked very much. I also liked the Weight of Water- both the book and the movie. After I finished that I started The House of Gentle Men- since I had given A Good Year for Plums- which I was in the middle of reading- to the other lady with me, since she didn't have a book. She loved Plums, and so she took it with her, and is sending it back to me via interdistrict mail when she finishes. I would have given her House of Gentle Men, but I thought the topic of that one was a bit iffier- one hesitates to give explicit books, that also cover the theme of rape, to someone one does not know. Or at least I hesitate. I think you have to know someone pretty well before you can feel really free to share books with them. I saw Girl with a Pearl Earring last night- and while it is not the book, it is very good. Some critics didn't like it- I don't know what they were thinking. Almost every shot is lit and framed like an old master painting. The cinematography is luminous, and breathtaking. We also saw the Last Samurai- which is very very good.
