You really can't expect the Iraqis to face down a threat, like the US war machine, unarmed.

This is what I was keying off of Carl... The reality is that Saddam had accumulated far more ordnance than he could have feasibly used merely in self-defense. It's going to take us up to 10 years to destroy it all, at current projections.

And that means someone sold it to him.. Someone who had a vital interest in making sure that Saddam was armed to the teeth..

And since it wasn't for the purpose of "facing down" the US (since the US was not a threat until AFTER Desert Storm), it stands to reason THAT HE WAS A THREAT to neighboring nations.

Maybe you're unaware of this fact, but this was the experience of the US in both WW1 and WW2, and Vietnam after the end of their war.

I'm quite aware of this.. Maybe you didn't know that much of the ordnance expended by the US in desert storm was Vietnam Era (especially the "dumb" bombs)..

Bottom line.. there was a damn good reason Saddam fancied himself as a new "Saladin". And he accumulated enough Soviet made equipment in order to make good on the vision, had it not been for the US/UK forces standing up to him.

Kuwait was Saddam's rendition of Hitler's invasion of Czechoslovakia.. Except he didn't get a "Munich" style response from the world.. He got a "Poland" style response.. But unfortunately, he was not required to step down and surrender political power as punishment for his invasion.
