I still want to know why it took ages to get basic services in Iraq.

Have a look at Fallows' essay "Blind Into Baghdad."

Well, you don't need to be an Arab to be outraged by the horrendous abuse of the Iraqi Arabs being held captive by the US. I am sickened, angered, and want the perpetrators to suffer the full penalty of the law. Indeed, I confess that I can't help thinking that hanging would be too good for them.

I note with some despair that Arabs seem, as usual, to care only when Arabs are mistreated, and only when the perpetrators are non-Arabs, but that this was so predictable is one of the reasons for my anger and outrage. The perpetrators couldn't have done more damage than if they'd sat around and brainstormed the worst thing imaginable, that would reflect the worst on the rest of us.
