I don't remember Bush ever saying in his campaign,"I will spend whatever it takes in American lives and wealth, and wreck our international alliances if need be, to lead a grand crusade to restore democracy to far-off lands which represent no immediate security threat to our borders."

If he had said that - if he had told the truth in advance about his intentions - what are the odds we would have been up past midnight on election day in 2000?

Zilch.

I am disappointed if I believe a politician has absolutely no intention of doing what he says.

I'm sure Bush means it when he speaks of fostering a stable democratic gov't there. Whether he is doing the right things to make it happen or not is open to question.

Kerry - my judgment is he is insincere when he says the same thing - however even with him I'm not 100% certain of that. He could be sincere. At least its arguable he could be.

..building such a society in Iraq is almost certainly impossible..

Ultimately it's a question of whether enough Iraqis want to make it happen. I don't know the odds. It's not impossible though. Note that Turkey and other Muslim nations have made this transition. And I think the benefits for our interests in the region would be big enough to make the attempt worthwhile.

The alternative to democratic transformation should it prove impossible is continued backing of the friendliest despots available.
