But that was a box that was destined to open itself far more explosively at some point down the road..

I would have ended the sentence with the phrase "..with Saddam at the helm enriched (and therefore armed) by money skimmed from the oil-for-food program."

The UN scandal may shed some light on the reasons why we were opposed by other countries as vigorously as we were.

The suggestion that we have endangered the Saudi royals and therefore our oil supply becausewe invaded Iraq strikes me as odd. OBL and his ilk have had their eyes on Saudi oil for years--the Iraq war did not change that goal at all.

Hi Hawkmoon,

Yes.. the overthrow of Saddam has, to some extent, unleashed Pandora's box.. But that was a box that was destined to open itself far more explosively at some point down the road..

And I get the sense that some of these people complaining now, would be complaining then about how we did nothing to prevent that inevitable anarchy..

I understand that we can't intervene militarily everywhere in the world, but there are certain situations that present themselves where the cost of doing nothing override the benefit of maintain some tenuous status quo.

Eventually we're all going to have to decide the point where we're going to expend as much effort opposing the militant totalitarian forces in the region, as these forces are expending in trying to advance their agenda in this region..

Hawk

All excellent points. Thanks.
