What should we do? Well, it's too late for most of the stuff we should have done, planning-wise, but we certainly should not put Bathist generals in charge of Iraq I don't think that one is going "to fly" for long... the JCS Gen. Myers seemed to indicate that Gen. Conway failed to consult with CPA authorities when he arranged for Gen. Saleh to take over the Falluja Security force.. We'll see what happens.. But that's only ONE recommendation from you.. Who do you think we should put in charge? And what should we do about the foreign fighters and local jihadists trying to dominate the situation in Iraq? I don't have much confidence that you have an actual solution.. or even constructive criticisms.. I am of the "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" school of diplomacy. Well, the Islamists are not. They definitely believe in using Vinegar.. and lobbing High Explosives into civilian neighborhoods... They also believe in assassinating anyone who opposes their goal of an Islamist state. So you can pour all the honey on them that you want.. They'll just gleefully consume it all and then kill you when you turn your back (or maybe give it to you right in the face). I would have left Iraq alone, and concentrated on propping up and making connections with moderate Muslims the world over (rather than working hard to alienate them, I don't care what you WOULD HAVE DONE. I want to know WHAT YOU THINK WE SHOULD DO NOW, AND IN THE FUTURE.. Just take a moment and attempt to own the problem, rather than playing monday morning quarterback. Of course now we are looking for our "Peace with Honor"- gosh I remember that speech well. I can't wait to hear the speech we get about Iraq. All well and good... Just retreat. Just what the Islamists are waiting for... And they will gladly fill in the power void... Because they certainly are not going to permit the Baathists to return to power.. And neither is Iran. Hawk
