Democracy was always a non-starter in Iraq. The only place where Democracy has been successfully forced on people is Japan, and we still have troops there. And even in Japan, they got to keep the emperor.

This torturing thing really hurts our case. IMHO, it looks like the CIA and the Pentagon are doing business as usual: torturing prisoners and encouraging the growth and distribution of opium in Afghanistan. While somehow missing most important intelligence developments. All militaries torture prisoners, but we have always pretended to be morally superior while tossing Vietnamese out of helicopters and drugging everyone who can talk. The question I have is why do we take home videos of our transgressions? And Gitmo's secrecy becomes more explainable now.
