I have to admit, my thinking has changed over the last few years and I think investing longterm is a questionable strategy. I know some do it, and do it well, but the market is too manic-depressive, and given the ease of trading online, all the hedge funds out there, etc, it seems wiser to trade. Obvious and trite examples of bad investment strategies include those with their 401K's in Enron, or MSFT owners of the last 4 years since it's essentially been flat.

As for those paid well to offer advice, I tend to be cynical about that and think it's a very corrupted process. As in: by the time analysts are publicily upgrading, their firms already accumulated and are ready to sell off.

Trading is a bit different, because you get in and out fairly quickly and set stops in case it doesn't go "your way".
