A friend of mine's son stuck a gun in his mouth to prove how safe it was. Just because the clip is out doesn't mean there isn't a round in the chamber. Donating the boy's organs gave the father a sense of relief. The used everything but his eyes.

RDW, I have all the forms signed, but it is tougher than you think. You almost have to die in a hospital for the time factor to work. Anyway, we can give blood while we're still around and I do that every couple of months, despite the fact that they mangled me the last two times. I've given blood for 35 years and never had a problem until lately. I think they may be hiring nursing school dropouts for the mobile unit. <G>

Since late 1997, there have been three legal ways to indicate your wish to be an organ donor. First, you can make the statement in your Last Will and Testament. Second, you can sign a legal document called a "declaration of anatomical gift." Finally, you can sign a card supplied by the local Organ Bank or Tissue Center.

For many years, it was legal to indicate your donation by checking a box on the back of your drivers’ license. If you did that before September 1997, the instruction is still legal. If you want to indicate your donation after September 1997, you have to use one of the three methods I just mentioned. Your drivers’ license is no longer adequate.

While all three of the methods are legal, the method you select must be sensitive to the speed requirements of donation. Any lengthy delay makes an organ donation impossible. Hence, you should avoid using your Last Will and Testament because it could be days before anyone reads it.
