Mexico-Cuba Relations Hit New Low
Mexico Accuses Cuba Of Meddling In Internal Affairs And Recalls Ambassador
May 3, 2004 6:08 am US/Central

The Mexican government, accusing Cuba of meddling in its internal affairs, gave the ambassador of the communist-run island his walking papers and said it will call its own ambassador home immediately.

The surprise action, jointly announced late Sunday by Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez and Interior Secretary Santiago Creel, stopped short of cutting off diplomatic relations altogether, but reduced the relationship to the level of charges d'affaires.

Cuban officials had no immediate reaction, but the Mexican government's decision underscored the extent to which bilateral relations have deteriorated since President Vicente Fox took office in 2000.

Derbez and Creel said three incidents led Mexico to its decision: recent remarks President Fidel Castro made regarding Mexico's recent human rights votes against Cuba; comments by Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque about an ongoing political scandal in Mexico; and unauthorized activities carried out by visiting Cuban Communist Party members who failed to notify Mexican officials of their presence.

I wonder what they were up to?

LB,

At least Ted is honest, he admits that he was/is against the Afghanistan campaign as well. He represents the mainstream hate-Bush crowd (not necessarily pro-Kerry).

These whacked out leftists can find no way for the US to respond - because we had it coming.

For example - he blames Clinton for 9/11. Not for the sane reasons some might critique Clinton or Bush, but because we dared retaliate for the embassy bombings (yes - the cruise missiles on the empty camps caused 9/11).

John
