Murali, Bush should be easy to beat. But, as Dubya showed this weekend, he can give a funny speech (I thought he was funnier than Leno) and that really helps. A huge number of Americans vote charisma over ability.

I had a friend who refused to meet any political candidate and wouldn't even watch them on tv. He wanted to see their position papers, and that was it. Anything else was "charisma," and he felt he was vulnerable to that. Bush has it and Kerry doesn't. Clinton had it and Reagan had it in spades. Bush senior had none, but Dukakis had less than none. We regularly elect the more likeable of two candidates. Which is why Eisenhower's campaign motto was "I like Ike."

I much prefer the sort of campaigns that have zero charisma. Goldwater/Johnson was decided on the two bumper stickers: "In your heart you know he's right." And, "In your guts, you know he's nuts." That cut right to the chase. Except it turned out that LBJ was as loony as Barry. <G>
