I think the window did close. I'm not as certain. You know the Shrum argument, that it's only idiots like you and I and the other members of this thread that pay attention to this stuff now. He argues the general electorate, particularly independents, don't tune in until after the conventions. I'm worried about the counter argument which is that we don't really know since this is the first time anyone has tried to define their opponent this early. So I think we just have to wait and see.
