The strong counter argument is that since the final responsibility in matters of war rests with the president, he/she must vet the plans with great care. And thus participate in the planning. Bush did not do that.

Of course he did. The public record is replete with details of planning meetings with GWB. Heck the demos have been screaming about what was and what was not discussed in those meetings. They even want every detail of meetings B had with any advisor and committee.
All leaders at his level must delegate authority and B did that. He did not however delegate responsibility...that is an essential key to a great leader.

So how's the western hills?

The scenery is spectacular.
Still snow on the peaks around us. It makes for awesome vistas. We see large numbers of Quail and Ring-necked Pheasant in our neighborhood. Have also seen plenty of Antelope and Elk. A Moose swam the lake and walked through a friend's yard a few days ago. I missed that one. Have also seen a coupla Bald Eagles, some Osprey, Hawks and lots of water fowl.
It is the attitude of the people that I find most attractive. Nobody beeps a car horn. Everyone yields to lane changers and pedestrians. Dress is casual everywhere. Folks in service jobs happily give great service. I had the pickup serviced (oil Change) yesterday. When I went to pick it up they told me it was dusty so they washed it at no extra charge.

First house guests due Friday. Headed to the annual SF Convention in Las Vegas next month. One of the SF Biker clubs is going to stage in our garage for the Spokane BMW Motorcycle Rally in July. Have a close buddy due in in a few weeks to house hunt. Kids and siblings lining up to come in July, August and September. Planning to meet my son in Jackson Hole in September (after school starts) to do some hiking and fishing in the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Best of all, My oldest daughter just announced another grandkid is on the way. We will be back in NC at the end of the year for that event. That will be grandkid #7.

John, what can I say. Retirement is tough duty, but as always, I volunteered for it.
