>>>Alan Greenspan weighed in Wednesday on the contentious debate over the future of Social Security and Medicare by suggesting that Congress scale back future benefits, saying America can't afford the programs.

The impending retirement of the baby boom generation, those born from 1946 to 1964, will swell the ranks of retirees. If unconstrained, the resulting growth in Social Security and Medicare costs could require tax hikes so large they would undermine the economy, he said.

"We are overcommitted at this stage," Greenspan told the House Budget Committee. "We have been making commitments without focusing on our capability of meeting them." <<<

The truth is they used the money for something else but they are not going to say that. But maybe China will help fund the Medicare plans with the purchase of more Treasury Bills, the US can't afford to. Nothing like a little debt between friends.

>>>The Patriot Act violates four of the 10 amendments in the Bill of Rights. These are the big ones, the ones that the Founding Fathers wrote. <<<

I'm not going to expand on this because the SI management gets upset if we talk politics here, but you get the idea.

Nikita,

Re: Where have you seen that government confiscating SS and Medicare?

Where have we not? <wink>

The U.S. government is like a criminal parent cracking open its children's piggy banks and stealing the money.

If you had the least bit of sophistication, you'd realize that all U.S. Treasury funds are fungible. I.e. the Federal government has been raiding the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds for decades in order to fund the rest of the government's operations, notoriously the over-bloated and unauditable Department of Death.

The government has been stealing our pensions for over two decades now. Bend over. Get used to it. It's not just the innocent Iraqis in Abu Ghraib prison who are being raped by the U.S. Government.
