...a stock is only worth what somebody else wants to pay for it, no matter how good (or not so good) the company is really doing.

This is a trader's attitude, and applies only to a small fractional interest on any given day. Investing is about figuring out what the whole company is worth, either in liquidation or as a discounted stream of future cash flow.
