When Marx was writing, in the early days of the Industrial Revolution, the working conditions of laborers was truly horrendous, and their lives in general famously nasty, brutish and short. We have indeed managed to simultaneously retain capitalism and make conditions better for laborers. I wonder what Marx would have thought.

Would he look at Bill Gates, and think that workers should have more, or would he look at the average American, with color TV and microwave ovens and automobiles, and think they had it made?
