I was in Paris a couple of months ago and had a wonderful time, FWIW. Don't let one or two anecdotes put you off visiting one of the great cities of the world.

How about Athens (Greece) in August? Plenty of Hellenic venues and museums, excellent climate --and a ringside on the Olympics to boot!! Don't hurry: rumor has it that, strangely enough, there's no rush yet....
