The worst outcome of this expose of the treatment of prisoners will be that the American public simply accepts it as being the norm, and forgets about it. According to Seymour Hersh it's systemic - right through the military - and this would imply it has been for some time. The torture and humiliation cannot be attributed to the actions of seven guards - the methods used were clearly designed by specialists to humiliate, torture and break Arabs/Muslims. The only reason action was taken was on account of the photos and one has the feeling that there are many many more out there.

The problem is that the public has a short attention span in this electronic age - and the violent sound bites will fade along with all the other images it sees including violence on TV and in the movies eg the Mel Gibson movie.

So the mistreatment of prisoners becomes a reality TV show like any other

The impact on the rest of the world and the Muslim world however is something far reaching and profound and altogether different - and a huge political set back for the States.

from Lee over at Market Swing:
...The whole detainee torture thing is beyond me. These idiots claiming they didn't know any better is pure BS. We ALL get MANDATORY Laws of Conflict training at least once a year, no ifs, ands or buts and regardless of if we will be in combat or not. We also get a reshresher before we deploy or might have any contact with enemy personnel. This course has been dumbed down to where any Moron will understand the basics. No shooting red cross vehicles, buildings, churches, mosques (sp), no torturing, raping, looting, souvenier taking etc allowed punishable by court marshall etc.
...The SSgt trying to claim the "I was just following orders " defence is also BS. We are all trained and forced to read about Nuremburg trials etc as well, the Vietnam trials etc. Besides, it doesnt take a brain surgeon to know that sodomizing someone is wrong.
...Last, the General claiming she didnt know is also BS. A high profile assignment like that with National attention regardless of where she physically worked would be doing site visits regularly, visiting the troops to ensure their jobs were being done correctly, talking to them to keep morale up, asking questions etc. I hope they hang her from a tree.
...The events of the last 2 years have now made us more hated around the globe than probably any other time in history. The defense industry should have job security now for some time as we have few friends left and loads of enemies.... with good reason.
