box-down-by-the-river was a poster that i found profitable to read. it'd be appreciated if you could possibly let him back in.

regarding political topics in investment thread, it is technically possible to permit a clean mix of topic and off-topic content, if you have the programming resources. for example, you might consider adding a flag that each poster must set to indicate off-topic posting. members not interested in off-topic posts can simply set "hide off-topic posts" much as they can hide "original post". an approach such as this will avoid sacrificing the subculture aspect of threads in the altar of focused topical discussions.

In regard your other question, I haven't received or been made aware of any inquires he may have made to other SI contacts regarding the possibility of reinstatement.

well, I know I and several other people PM'd SI Bob about the new SI dictatorial environment in which Box was banned for vociferously participating in an argument that he didn't start. personally, I find the new policies too much like a censuring government and think Box should be reinstated.

You, Dave, are taking a top down approach. You know best and therefore you decide the matter. But in fact that's dictating and bottom up is democratic. Since we can protect ourselves with ignore, a wonderful feature of SI, there is really no problem down where the people live. It only looks like a problem to you too far above it. That's the problem that CEOs of corporations have. They are often not clear about what's going on at the bottom level.
I, for example, have a bunch of people on ignore.
1. A guy who ONLY talks about politics.
2. Another guy who makes no useful points about investing and has just one thing to point to make in regard to non-investing matters.
3. Another man is malevolent, aiming to trap a friend of mine in the real world. not the SI chat world.
4. Some racists. I put them on ignore so fast I can't
remember their names.
Just an example of the rich negative side of discussion.

SI Dave:

>>That said, I don't see how the site or the membership at large would benefit from a reinstatement<<

Good decision on Box, Dave. Box, aka GOD, W.F.Godot & Joel Gander, if I am not mistaken, is (now was, I guess) the single most unpleasant and vilely misogynistic poster on SI.

Dave,

I appreciate your concerns about BBR, but what SI really needs is a selective ignore feature! For example, I would like to be able to ignore:

1) Posts by Elmat that advocate "mass migration".

2) Posts by Box to ACF, and vice-versa.

3) Posts by Ray on days when he uses the word "risible" more than three times.

4) Posts by Baldur during the Icelandic winter.

5) Posts that accuse the recipient of being racist.

6) Etc.

This would be real killer application. You could probably charge extra for this service!
