I am from India. I come from an area where many last names end with an "i" :-) which makes it sound italian last names. India has it's own debate on which one should be the national language. Officially it is Hindi which is spoken or understood predominantly by North Indians. South does not want Hindi and wanted English also since Hindi has not been spoken and not understood by many of them (things may have changed now). While there is an occasional tug of war where the southern politicians (read demagogues) refused Hindi and northern politicians (read demagogues again) refused English. However they all are in a happy fluid medium with business conducted in both languages as they have already been established.

However, I see no reason to promote additional languages in this country. English should be it.
