To: NickSE who wrote (42304 ) 5/5/2004 6:45:11 PM From: NickSE Respond to of 793640 Pro- And Anti-American People This is an interesting list at Pharaoh's blog (http://bigpharaoh.blogspot.com/2004_04_01_bigpharaoh_archive.html#10832809014100425) of the most pro-American people in the world. 1) Kurds 2) Eastern Europeans (USA helped them in defeating communism and establishing freedom; 100,000 Romanians stood in the pouring rain to listen to a speech by Bush) 3) Israelis 4) Older generation of South Koreans (those fought along with US soldiers so that they won’t end up starving under the yoke of the North Korean leader) 5) A large number of Iranians (the only Muslims who automatically held street vigils after 911 all by themselves) 6) French who live around Normandy! 7) A good number of Kuwaitis. 8) Secular Iraqis and moderate religious Iraqis. I would add - somewhere in the middle of the list - the 5 - 10 per cent of Germans who as children lived in the immediate aftermath of WWII and/or who had the chance to stay for an extended period of time in the US, as students or as part of a job assignment. It is tempting to create a list of the most anti-American people in the world. Here is my suggestion: 1. All types of fundamentalist muslims such as Osama bin Ladin/Al-Quaida and the Iranian Mullahs. 2. Saddam Hussein's followers (to the extent that they are still alive). 3. The German Left in the media and in politics (see below for further explanation). 4. The North-Korean leadership, for obvious reasons. 5. The French political èlite, in their never ceasing illusionary lust for world dominance. 6. Fidel Castro and his sad remnants of socialism. 7. Lest I forget: Michael Moore, Susan Sontag, Noam Chomsky, and all the lunatics of the American Left. 8. Hamas, or whatever the Israelis left of them. As to the German Left - they exhibit a strange combination of love and hate for America and for American ideals. While they enjoy the political and economic freedom America has brought to post-war Germany, they are at the same time obsessed by a venomous hatred of the youthful energy and competitive drive that is so typical of Americans. There seems to a strong correlation between the disastrous results of German politics and the growth of anti-Americanism. It is as if the many failures of German politics were easier to bear for the Left if the US would fail in Iraq. What the German Left doesn't realize: if the US actually fails in Iraq, it won't change the dismal state of affairs in Germany one bit. And if the US is successful in Iraq, it won't change the dismal state of affairs in Germany one bit, either. Actually nothing short of working harder and taxing less will change the dismal state of affairs in Germany one bit. medienkritik.typepad.com
