Sure they wanted to make an issue of it Gloop, but lets be honest. Kerry joined the Navy, like many other young men at that time, because he was going to be drafted into the army. The Navy and Air Force and Guards of that time were the enlistment of choice for folks that were going to be drafted.

First we need to distinguish between joining the Guard during the draft during Nam, and joining the Guard in today's military. The expectations of what joining the Guard then and now are entirely different.

As someone on this thread said, many joined the Air Force and the Navy to avoid being drafted into the Army. So too many people joined the Coast Guard and the National Guard to fulfill their obligation as well.

It was also well known that service in the National Guard, or the Coast Guard for that matter, all but guaranteed that you would stay out of Vietnam, especially when you requested no overseas duty, such as Bush did.

This is just a fact. It does not diminish the sacrifices of today's Guard members. But trying to compare today's Guard with the Guard 30 years ago is simply invalid.

There's no doubt that Bush took the easy way out. And on the name of his father, who was a WWII Pilot and a war hero, Bush got preference in the TANG. I'm not going to waste time here talking about Bush's TANG career, because it has been discussed ad nauseum already. But clearly comparing Bush's service to the sacrifice of the Guard members today lacks the integrity of critical thinking and knowledge of the facts.

I also think the media and liberals have run with the treatment of POW's in Iraq. I don't think Bush is responsible for the deeds of a few bad people but if he is - again - I will want Kerry's actions judged in the same way.

Interesting. If Bush turns out to be responsible for the treatment of Iraqi POWs...you'll want blood from Kerry? Hey nothing partisan about that! ;^)

It was reported today that Bush only knew about the POWs this week, but that Rumsfeld has known about this for more than a month. It is a serious problem...and for people to be hamming it up in photos and videos shows a complete disregard for basic decency. They had a cavalier attitude of this being acceptable behavior. To me the treatment of these POWs is a war crime. I hope the folks involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of military justice.
