I'm not much for those kinds of stalemates.

I'm not either... I believe that once we initiate a policy decision, the time for debating the correctness of that policy should be set aside and the full determination of ALL political parties focus on deriving a positive and sucessful result.

As far as a plan to cut "the Ho Chi Minh Trail through supposedly "neutral" Laos, deny the Cambodian sanctuaries from which the NVA and Viet Cong were operating, and then maybe S. Vietnam would have stood a chance of surviving...," why do you think that "plan" would have worked?

Because it was working FOR THEM, silly!!!

They couldn't successfully conduct their invasion through the DMZ, so they invaded two neutral countries in order to obtain better access at invading a third, S. Vietnam.

And if they were willing to invade, why weren't we just as willing to counter-invade and partition the country, rather than permitting the NVA and VC to have the benefit of interior lines and safe havens? (Then you wouldn't have been out of artillery range?)

We had 500,000 men strewn the entire length of Vietnam.. Why not put them right across the length of Laos and establish a permanent interdictive presence there?

Wny weren't we just as willing to permit the S. Vietnamese to invade the north via amphibious assault?

We limited our strategies CD.. While they did not.

The problem was we just didn't have the will to pursue as aggressive a strategy as they did..

And of course, we also didn't force the S. Vietnamese government to take their own defense as seriously as they should have..
