Tom, Well, you've got these loony tune Normans causing trouble all over Europe and Frenchmen fighting Germans fighting Aragonese fighting Lombards. And Frenchmen fighting Frenchmen and crazies fighting for the throne of backwater England. Many of these battles took place in Italy and this made the Pope nervous. So, what does he do? He sends the testosterone loaded troublemaking, poverty stricken younger sons out to conquer the Holy Land, thinking that will take the plague of goons out of Europe. From his point of view, it worked for awhile. From the point of view of Muslims, Orthodox Christians, the Byzantine Empire, Jews and native Christians in the Holy Land, it was like turning 100s of thousands of mad dogs loose on them. But, in the words of the Pope, better you should deal with the Normans than me. <G>
