If I'm not mistaken, the Merchant Marine suffered one of the highest mortality rates of any service. So we owe them our thanks, since without them the war would have been over before the first shot was fired.

My uncle served in the Merchant Marine and had two ships torpedoed while he was on them. He spent a couple of weeks floating around waiting to be picked up. I have a box of his letters and postcards on the desk, using them for family genealogy. He did see the world.

I would not forget the Merchant Marine. They perfomed brilliantly and bravely in the face of continuous U boat attacks.
I believe they have been awarded Veteran's benefits though they were not considered a uniform service at that time. They certainly saw enough combat.
I crossed from NYC to Bremerhaven on a WWII troop ship in October 1963...I think it was the USS Patch.
