the ESSENTIAL point made at today's hearing was of course that what we have seen was just the work of a 'few bad apples' , the cogs of the machine inhabiting the lowest rung ( iow., please don't ask for anyone higher up to do the honorable thing ) .
i recommend in this context to look at recent editorials on antiwar.com ( the libertarian antiwar site ) , several of which detail testimony from former prisoners which suggests exactly the opposite, namely that abuse has been a systemic policy, sanctioned from above. incidentally, that's EXACTLY what the 'few bad apples' are saying too. and why not? it seems only logical, after all, this overseas gulag is an extralegal space. from the looks of it, no-one actually has jurisdiction over the 'private contractors' ( the hired torture dungeon creeps ) involved.
and there's another, more fundamental reason why we shouldn't be surprised by any of this. THIS IS WHAT WAR DOES. it brings out the worst in people - it dehumanizes the 'good' guys just as the 'bad' ones.
there's a lot of handwringing now over the 'moral authority' that has been lost ( or rather, the utter hypocrisy now finally exposed in the starkest possible way, although no-one actually says so ) . but for the people at the receiving end of the occupation's attentions, such moral authority was never assumed to exist anyway. they have merely received irrefutable confirmation of what they have known all along.
