NEAT stands for Near Earth Asteroid Tracking, which is the team of astronomers that discovered this comet while searching for asteroids that are near our planet and may one day pose a collision hazard.

Astronomers really missed an acronym opportunity there. I would have termed it YIKES. -g

According to the producers of the new movie The Day After Tomorrow, we'll be largely wiped out by a huge storm that ushers in a new ice age. Frankly, when it comes to global catastrophe, I've got both that scenario and the asteroid strike ranked after a biological plague. Forget Homeland Security, we should be founding a Global Catastrophic Prevention company.
