More details have surfaced about Intel Corp.'s 65-nm fab-tool buying spree, in which Lam Research Corp. has reportedly beaten Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TEL) for the dielectric etch business at the account, according to sources.

For 65-nm, Intel will reportedly use Lam's Exelan 2300 dielectric etch tool, sources said.
This could be a blow for TEL, which is the incumbent supplier of dielectric etch tools at Intel. Intel reportedly will continue to use Hitachi Ltd.'s etch tools for poly applications.

For some time, Intel has been quietly ordering and installing its first chip-equipment for the 65-nm node, in a massive procurement effort initially worth about $500-to-$700 million, according to industry analysts. Over time, Intel's 65-nm fab-tool procurement bonanza could extend into the billions of dollars, analysts said.
