I keep trying to convince you that our tactics failed miserable because there WERE NO TACTICS THAT COULD HAVE SUCCEEDEDED. You're right.. I don't want to hear that because I implicitly believe its wrong. I don't believe in the "unwinnable scenario" (maybe I've been indoctrinated by the "Captain Kirk" Kabayashi Maru syndrome), but I believe that there are solutions to every issue, if we're willing to be innovative about it, as well as express it as a part of our national will to defend our values over those of brutal totalitarian ideologies. After all, we beat the N. Koreans and Chinese, despite their massive infiltration of the South behind our very lines and at least eeked out a stalemate at the 38th parallel.. As for Foriegners, there was NOTHING more foreign to the Vietnamese people that Marxism. And the 52 various nationalities/ethnicities CONTINUE to wage resistance to the CURRENT Vietnamese marxist regime. But there is no "Ho Chi Minh trail" for them, or US oil tankers and supply ships lined up in any foriegn harbors flooding them with the means to wage this insurgency against Hanoi. And there was a damn good reason that 800,000 Vietnamese fled to the south when Uncle Ho and his communists gained power in the north.. It seems to me that this population was an extremely viable force against the communist regime, if only we had had the will to arm it, and the guts to deploy it against them in order to recapture their ancestral homes... But we feared another Korea.. We feared another Chinese intervention.. And we were content to permit the North to wage their campaign against the south without their being afraid of a US escalation and invasion of the north across the DMZ. No.. I reject the unwinnable scenario CD.. Because I don't believe it truly exists.. What exists is a self-defeating and incrementalist approach to fighting for our values and helping others to achieve their own version of them. And that's the same situation we are facing in the Mid-East.. Except this time around, the enemy is focused upon destroying us.. Because that's the only means by which they can prosper and establish control over the region. Hawk
