Genealogy is the 2nd most popular hobby in the United States. Don't know about the world. It is fun for many people, and gives one a sense of history, cultures, wars and how they were fought and why, peace and what occured during that time, town and county lines, and when and why they changed, etc.

In a mild way, it is a little like Iraq right now. When the people themselves feel like they really can have a peaceful country, and a great life, they will take ownership of that feeling, to make it happen for themselves.

BTW, the reason the DAR has that reputation, is because they have made a concerted effort for the last 40+ years to be sure that ALL lines are varified with known and ACCEPTED sources. They have put a "hold" on some lines, until a prospective member who wants to join on that line, and does some real work to prove the connection is accurate.

The LDS hasn't always been known to be that deserning on the documentation previously submitted.
