LONDON, May 6 -- A British soldier went to authorities Thursday with allegations of prisoner abuse in Iraq and was questioned by military police, the Defense Ministry said.

Piers Morgan, editor of the Daily Mirror newspaper, told BBC television that the soldier had also spoken to his publication, citing four incidents of severe beatings meted to prisoners. Details were to be published Friday, Morgan said. "He will also be naming the names of the people responsible, including . . . some senior officers," Morgan said.

Last week, the paper published photos apparently showing British soldiers urinating on a hooded prisoner and beating him with a rifle butt. It also quoted unnamed soldiers describing abuse. Some British military people have said the photos appear to have been faked; the British government is investigating.
