Remember, in Washington, it's not the things you do that hurt you, it's the cover-up.

I think in a deeper sense, this is the American's belief in accountability of their government - as part of our strongly held belief that the government should be subservient to the people and not the other way around as is the case in most of the worlds "People's Republics", whether it's La République Française" or the regrettably much more common dictatorships with "republic" or "democracy" in their names.

Sooner or later, whether it's J. McCarthy or J. Edgar, if people in Washington push things too far, there will be a backlash. I don't think "this time it's different" on this score. It mainly sells books and media space to say it is. And strokes the egos of smug individuals who would like to think they know something the great unwashed masses don't, which is the great attraction of conspiracy theories from whichever side of the political spectrum they come from. The behavior of certain people on this discussion thread is ample demonstration of that.
