Ghandi was smart strategically as well as spiritually. He lived in the British culture enough to know how the people would react if they saw their soldiers clubbing passive people. He was right. The British were totally demoralized to a state of military and political paralysis.

He would never have tried this with the Russians of the day.

flash forward to the modern day. Why is the abuse of the interrogators getting so much air when the conditions in most Muslim countries are far worse (rulers on their own people) without even a military conflict? Because the world knows we can not accept the identity of an invader followed by torture of the innocents. What goes to the air is more political and self serving than anything else. We will likely crumble under the weight.

The argument the right wingers are giving me over on the Bush thread is that when compared to the charred bodies of the tortured Americans, how can anyone complain? Easy... but you have to be able to view things from more than one cultural perspective. Apparently many people can not. There is only one perspective that counts and that is my own. Am I conducting myself as a decent human being, standing for just treatment of others and against unjust treatment of others in all cases. Can't be done while trying to drive an agenda, IMO.
