Given a strict evolutionary model with no God there is simply no basis beyond preference to determine right and wrong

The main basis is to follow what those who are bigger stronger and most trusted say is right and wrong. This usually corresponds to parents. The ethics are reenforced by the degree of conformity and uniformity in the surroundings.

Human evolution has a societal component that is missing in the assembages of crocodiles and gazelles.

"The Crocodile does not care that the gazelle thinks he has an unalienable right to drink at the water hole. He does not feel guilty; Why should he? There is no reason that humans should be held to a different standard."

That is correct. The crocodile follows the greatest good--to preserve his life (did you ever see a crocodile who tried to do otherwise?! Are they "evil", then?! :-))

A human ought also to preserve his life if he is to be good to himself. Therefore (like the crocodile) we kill, kill, and kill to EAT, EAT, and EAT! Are we being EVIL? NO!!

All of Nature is held to the same standard. Never fear, Greg. :-) Greg doesn't feed himself to the crocodile. He won't even feed himself to a duck! Greg thinks that feeding the duck (with Greg) is EVIL! Of course, he does! Greg good--Ducky BAD! ... and Crocky WORST!
